Output O3

Combine digital teaching–learning (EAD) with project-based learning (PBL)

O3 - 2π Learning Space

In Output 3, we designed and built a proof-of-concept of the 2 π Learning Space. The 2 π Learning Space is a directionless classroom specifically designed to implement active learning pedagogies, especially PBL. It is grounded on scientific literature and other examples from leading universities. Its architecture encompasses the Digital D-PBL Cells, which are intended to favour group working on projects. They are the PBL group “headquarters”, from which most of the multidisciplinary teamwork is carried out.

Classroom Layouts for Technology-Based Active Learning Spaces
Paper presented at the 2023 E-Business Technologies Conference. The paper surveys active learning spaces designed for effective education.
Digital+PBL for No-Borders and Sustainable Students’ Effective Learning
Presentation of the D-PBL’s Implementation in Classroom Context Piloting. The presentation summarizes the semester-long implementation of PBL with digital technologies with real students and advisors doing real projects. The results exceeded the most ambitious expectations.
2π Learning Space
The video illustrates the proof-of-concept done at the University of Maia of the 2π Learning Space. Its design grounds on the best examples surveyed and includes the PBL cells. The Columbus egg here was to wheel the tables. How can something as simple as wheeling tables and chairs have such unexpected results? This simple trick does magic, as the instructor can easily adapt the room layout to what the learning process needs. The video exemplifies some layouts, but many more are possible.
